November saw the launch of Apple’s new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini, in what was an eye opening event that introduced people from all over the world to the Apple M1 chip and MacOS Big Sur. One could argue that the event introduced the biggest Mac redesign in 14 years, when Apple transitioned from PC to Intel chips.  You may have missed a few of the details so we’ve made a brief recap of the night’s event. 

Big Sur. Big Ideas.

For those of you that don’t already know, macOS Big Sur (Named after the Californian mountain) is the highly anticipated operating system upgrade from the world’s biggest technology company. The event emphasised the speed of the new OS, having the ability to run Javascript 1.5 times faster than its predecessor. This means that tasks that require more power, such as rendering video will run much faster.

Apple software boss Craig Federighi described Big Sur as having “a bold new design and powerful upgrades of apps like Safari and Messages”.  Adobe have also announced they will be rolling out versions of their apps over the next few months, beginning with Lightroom in December and Photoshop at the start of 2021.

Furthermore, Big Sur promises advanced power management as well as adding automatic encryption to all files stored on your PC and with the help of the new M1 chip (don’t worry, we’ll get to that) Big Sur promises to bring the most advanced security of any personal computer.

Big Sur will be available from Thursday the 12th November as a free upgrade to all eligible devices. So you’ll be able to see the new changes for yourself.

The M1 chip talks a big game, with the promise that it can deliver the peak performance of the “latest PC laptop chip” on a quarter of the power. It is the first time Apple is powering a Mac with a chip of its own design. Moving away from the intel chips they have been using for the last 14 years. The M1 is a new, Mac version of the A14X iPhone Chip, the same chip that powers the new iterations of the iPhone. This means that the Mac will be able to power iOS applications!

Improved battery life and the ability to instantly wake your MacBook up from sleep mode are great strengths of the products. Breaking this down into numbers, this means that the new models will have 3.5 times faster CPU performance, 6 times faster GPU performance, and up to 15-times faster machine learning performance.

Apple has promised M1 is only the first in a family of chips called Apple Silicon. The future certainly looks fast and we can’t wait to enjoy the new OS. You can view the full Apple event by clicking this link

No Fan. No Noise. Just Air.
